Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Cockburn Central

An ingrown toenail is one of the most painful and common foot complaints treated by our Cockburn Central podiatrists. Without proper treatment, ingrown toenails can become infected and significantly affect your daily activities. Our podiatrists provide same-day relief and, where needed, a simple permanent surgical solution performed right here in our Cockburn Podiatry clinic.

What Is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) occurs when the edge or corner of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin rather than over it. This creates a sharp point (spicule) that pierces the skin, causing a localised inflammatory response. The big toe is most commonly affected, but any toenail can become ingrown.

Causes of Ingrown Toenails

  • Incorrect nail cutting — cutting nails too short or rounding the corners rather than cutting straight across
  • Tight or ill-fitting footwear — compressing the toes and pushing the nail into the skin
  • Curved or fan-shaped nail shape (involuted nails) — a hereditary predisposition
  • Nail trauma — stubbing the toe or repeated pressure from sport
  • Hyperhidrosis — excessive sweating that softens the skin around the nail
  • Picking or tearing nails rather than cutting them cleanly

Symptoms of an Ingrown Toenail

  • Pain along one or both sides of the toenail, especially with pressure or footwear
  • Redness and swelling of the skin around the nail edge
  • Hardened, inflamed skin at the nail border
  • In infected cases: warmth, pus, increased pain, and a bad odour
  • A small growth of inflamed tissue (hypergranulation) at the nail edge in chronic cases

Do not ignore an infected ingrown toenail. In patients with diabetes or poor circulation, an infection can escalate rapidly.

Ingrown Toenail Treatment Options

Conservative Treatment (No Surgery)

For early or mild ingrown toenails, our podiatrist uses a sterile scalpel to carefully remove the ingrown nail spike (spicule) from beneath the skin. This is performed without anaesthetic and provides immediate pain relief. We also clean the area, treat any infection, dress the toe, and provide detailed advice on nail cutting technique and footwear to prevent recurrence.

Partial Nail Avulsion (Nail Surgery)

For recurrent, painful, or severely infected ingrown toenails, partial nail avulsion is the gold-standard treatment. Here is what the procedure involves:

  1. Local anaesthetic is injected at the base of the toe — you will feel only mild pressure after this point
  2. The offending section of nail (one or both edges, depending on your case) is removed back to the nail root
  3. Phenol chemical may be applied precisely to the nail matrix to permanently destroy that section of nail root, preventing regrowth (if required)
  4. The toe is dressed and you leave the clinic walking normally
  5. Regular dressing changes are required for 2–3 weeks as the toe heals

The remainder of your nail is left fully intact and looks completely normal once healed. The procedure takes approximately 45-60 minutes in total.

After Nail Surgery — What to Expect

  • You can walk immediately and drive home after the procedure
  • Mild soreness for 2–3 days
  • Dressing changes at home daily (we provide a complete dressing kit and instructions)
  • Review appointments to assess healing
  • Avoid swimming and strenuous sport for 2 weeks
  • Wear open-toed footwear or comfortable shoes for the first few days

Preventing Ingrown Toenails

Our podiatrists will teach you the correct nail cutting technique — cutting straight across, not too short, and not rounding the corners. Additional prevention advice includes:

  • Wear well-fitting footwear with adequate toe box width
  • Avoid tight socks and hosiery
  • Keep feet clean and dry
  • See a podiatrist for regular nail care if you have difficulty cutting your own nails

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the nail surgery painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic so you will not feel pain — only mild pressure. There is some soreness for 2–3 days after as the anaesthetic wears off, manageable with standard pain relief.

Will my ingrown toenail come back?

Conservative treatment relieves pain but the nail may re-ingrow without a change in nail cutting habits. Partial nail avulsion with phenolisation has a higher success rate — the treated nail edge will not regrow.

Can I walk after nail surgery?

Yes. Most patients walk out of the clinic and drive home. Wear comfortable, open-toed shoes for a few days and avoid swimming and sport for 2 weeks.
